Wigan Rotary Club

Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, part of Rotary International, has 1,845 clubs and more than 55,000 members.
Rotary International was founded in 1905 in Chicago and is now the world’s largest international service organisation with 1.2 million professional men and women as members. There are 33,000 clubs in 200 countries and geographical areas.
Rotary clubs are open to men and women of all ages who are business, professional or community leaders and who want to use their experience for the benefit of others.

The Rotary Club of Wigan was founded 90 years ago in March 1924. It is also 100 years ago since the start of the First World War and in the Club we realise that many of those early members must have been survivors of that terrible war.

We wish to commemorate and remember those men and we would be grateful if you have any memories of a relative who may have been in the Wigan Club at that time you would pass on those memories via the contact details below. We would also be pleased to contact you to talk about it if that is more preferable.

Under the very hot summer sun, Standishgate vibrated to the sound of a choir, a female singer and a youth theatre group on Saturday. All along the street local charities, who had been brought together by the Rotary Club of Wigan, were in full flood telling the shoppers about their good causes, seeking to recruit volunteers and informing fellow sufferers. Other raised much needed funds so their good work continued. They ranged from the Parkinson Disease Society to the local Scouts and included local churches, youth groups, book exchanges and older peoples' groups. All reported that they had enjoyed the opportunity of meeting the shoppers and others who had made the special effort to come.

On the stage were the Wigan Community Choir, local young singer Zoe Unsworth and the Willpower Theatre Group. Their efforts were very much appreciated by the crowds who gathered around during the afternoon.
Mervyn Reeves from the Rotary Club of Wigan said that the club were very impressed by all those who had responded to their invitation. He said that it was good to welcome our new Mayor to the event who had commented on what a delightful event this was. The Rotary Club will be holding the event again next year which will be open to all local charities, local branches
of national charities and recognised good causes, at no cost to the good cause.
